Background to Medea
-
Pelias usurps throne of Iolcos from Jason's father
-
Pelias sends Jason on a quest to obtain the Golden Fleece, owned by Aeetes,
King of Colchis (Medea's father)
-
Jason and his followers build a ship, the Argo, and sail as the
Argonauts for Colchis.
-
Medea, daughter of Aeetes and renowned as a sorceress, falls in love with
Jason, kills her brother, deceives her father, and helps Jason get the
fleece--in return for a promised marriage.
-
After several adventures (Medea saves Jason's life several times), Jason
and Medea take the fleece and return to Iolcus, where he reclaims the
throne.
-
Medea tricks Peleus's daughters into killing their father.
-
Medea and Jason are exiled as a consequence and move to Corinth, where
they live for 10 years.
-
In the process, Medea bears two children to Jason.
-
Jason hadn't married Medea according to Greek law, so he renounces her
and marries the daughter of Creon, King of Corinth.
