Presentations

During the term, you are expected to give a 10 minute presentation on an assigned topic, which you plan in consultation with me and using materials provided or in your textbook. These topics directly relate to the materials the class will have read for that day, and your classmates will be responsible for the concepts you discuss. Consequently, your presentation will be very important to the class as a whole. Please plan your presentation as follows:

  1. Consult the class schedule to determine if your presentation will cover materials in the book or elsewhere. If the materials are not in the book, I can either provide you with the materials you need or direct you to an internet site containing that material. Please ensure that you ask me about the materials well before you are due to present.
  2. Read over the materials and formulate a plan for your presentation. If you are not clear about anything you have read, be sure to ask me about it! We are reading materials from a very distant past, and it is not expected that you will understand the whole context of what you are reading. You will want to clarify anything, though, before you arrive to deliver your presentation. If you wish, you may display video clips, internet sites, or powerpoint slides in our classroom.
  3. Your presentation must be no longer than 10 minutes and should include the following:
    1. a brief introduction to materials you read,
    2. a summary of what they said, and
    3. a brief statement about how they relate to the materials we are covering in class that day.
  4. You must provide a handout to your classmates and to me that summarizes your main points/ideas.
