Renaissance Humanism
Renaissance--A reconsideration of past knowledge, reinterpreted
and reformulated into new ideas
European Renaissance began in 14th century Florence; scholars
read Greek, Latin writers, while reinterpeting classical and
medieval ideas symbolically, allegorically, or abstractly (e.g.,
myths, correspondences)
Christian humanism--Movement that believed individuals (and
especially rulers) should strive for perfection and influence others
through the pursuit and transmission of knowledge, esp. in the
liberal arts (philosophy, history, poetry, music, the visual arts,
and dancing)
