Computer networks tend to me packet switched. The telephone network is circuit switched. The difference is whether a pathway through the network's "nodes" is established in advanced and maintained for the entire communication (circuit switched) or if the message is broken into small segments (packets) and sent across the network, each finding perhaps its own route (packet switched).
