Arenal Volcano or Volcán
Arenal, in Spanish, is currently the youngest
and most active volcano in Costa Rica. During
our trip we got to see this spectacular natural
attraction while visiting Arenal Paraíso. Arenal
dates back about 4000 years and, before the
catastrophic eruption of 1968, was considered
extinct since it had been silent for a little
less than half a century. On the morning of July
29, 1968 it suddenly violently erupted, blowing
a huge hole out the side of the volcano. The
eruption killed 87 people, covered three
villages and formed three new active craters in
the volcano. Since then it has had continuous
activity with major eruptions occurring in 1973,
1975, 1993, 200, 2003, and 2005. Fatalities
caused by the volcano have been limited to
tourists and guides that wandered too close.
Minor eruptions occur every 5-10 minutes. While
our group was down there we were lucky enough to
clearly see lava flow at night, especially since
it is a cloudy region and doesn't always have
great visibility . The information used above is

for more information about
the volcano’s history or to view spectacular
photos go to the link above.
Although the photos are incredible actually
seeing the volcano's grandeur in person is
indescribable, so for tourist information about
visiting Arenal you can go to the above website
